Selecting the Best Backpacking Tent: A Tent Buying Guide
While some of the features that you will need to consider when buying a backpacking tent are similar to the considerations that you will make when
buying camping tents, there are some considerations that become more important when selecting the best backpacking tent.
The main considerations you should make when choosing the best backpacking tent include:
Tent Weight:
It is probably obvious to most that when you are choosing a backpacking tent, the lighter weight that a tent is the better, as you will be carrying
all of your gear with you. You will find that most solo backpacking tents will weigh around 2 to 3 pounds. Sometimes multiple people will share a two or
three person backpacking tent in order to split the weight of a tent and other gear between the individuals. While a lighter tent is often preferred for
backpacking, it is also important to remember that a lighter weight will typically result in smaller interior space.
Tent Size:
Tent size is the next factor to consider when choosing a backpacking tent. Backpacking tents are usually smaller tents that can sleep one, two,
three, or four people. Most backpacking tents are generally designed to fit snuggly in order to reduce the overall weight. Because of this, two larger
people may prefer a three person tent simply to provide a more comfortable fit. Additionally, if you are backpacking with a pet or children or if you
plan to carry a lot of extra gear that you will need to store in your tent, you may want to buy a backpacking tent that is slightly larger for extra
room and comfort.
Weather Conditions:
Most backpackers find that a 3-season backpacking tent is suitable for their purposes. Three-season tents are designed to be used comfortably in
spring, summer, and fall. If you will be camping frequently in hot, humid weather, you may prefer a tent that offers large mesh panels for extra
ventilation. If you will be camping in more rugged conditions including during winter months or in extremely windy conditions, you will likely want to
purchase an expedition or mountaineering tent that can withstand high winds and more extreme weather.
In general, a guideline that you should follow when choosing and buying a backpacking tent is to buy a tent that is equipped to handle the worst
conditions that you ever expect to encounter. This will ensure comfort during your expeditions.
